Backup Storage Devices

Types of backup storage devices

With our current digital world, every individual or business has dealt with data in one way or another. And if you highly depend on this data, then it is important to have some backup storage devices to store extra copies of your data in case anything happens to your primary data. There are several backup storage devices you can buy and each choice depends on the amount of data you have, the frequency of backing up, and the cost. You can host your data locally or remotely.

Backup Storage Devices

1. Local Storage Devices

i. Hard Drives

An internal hard drive is the main storage memory of computers and laptops. It is where all of your files and operating system are stored. However, when you need extra storage, you can use an external hard drive which is similar to an internal drive except it’s portable. It is connected to the laptop through the 2.0 USB, 3.0 USB, or SATA or eSATA connector. They, therefore, are perfect backup storage devices for local use at home, small businesses, or schoolwork. A solid state drive is similar to a hard drive except it doesn’t have moving parts. This means it’s more robust albeit offers lower storage space. If you’re dealing with small amounts of data up to 3 TB, you can use hard drives to store your backup data. Note that they’re very delicate and can get damaged when they fall or through an electric surge.

ii. Network Attached Storage

In layman words, network-attached storage is a collection of several hard disks grouped together to act as one storage and connected to a network where data is transferred to and fro computers. This means more data can be held at a time and businesses can automate the backup process. A RAID system can also be implemented which acts as a failsafe. It basically ensures that if one hard drive fails, other drives can take up its functions and everything will continue running smoothly. A NAS is connected into the network through a router or an Ethernet and all computers have access to it all the time. The main disadvantage is it’s stored within the business network offering low protection against data loss should a disaster occur.

iii. Flash Disks

Flash disks have the same structure as SSDs except they’re extremely portable and offer much lower storage space. Ideally, as backup storage devices, they can be used to transport small chunks of data between computers. They can also store data for a very long time. The maximum allowable storage space on a flash disk has now reached 1TB making it quite convenient for storing data. Use them for small amounts of data that you need to take with you.

iv. Optical Compact Disc

Compact discs are highly popular for storing songs, movies, media or software due to their cheap prices. As backup storage devices, you can only store data there for a short period of time and they’re very delicate. They easily get damaged, so should be handled with care. CDs can store up to 900 MB worth of data while DVDs can store up to 17GB. They get worn out faster especially if you re-write data.

2. Cloud Storage

Cloud storage is the ultimate solution for all your data backup needs. It is a commercial data storage service offered by a vendor to any computer with internet access. Initially, some vendors provide free limited storage space with extra storage given on a subscription basis or per-use basis. The vendor hosts the backup storage on behalf of the client and facilitates the backup process. It is advantageous to businesses dealing with continuous data as the process can be automated and conducted in the background. Being remote, it reduces the risk of data loss through physical disasters by geo-duplication. You also get intensive cyber-security for your data. Furthermore, you can get as much storage as the vendor is able to provide giving you more freedom for scalability and flexibility.
